{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

I've been thinking a lot about how I could never take on this challenge.

1) My brain feels like it has atrophied after I finished my degree last year.
2) When I get super enthusiastic about a subject my enthusiasm burns bright but fast; It's extremely likely I'd get sick of whatever the thing was before I reached even thirty entries.
3) I can't imagine being able to tell people anything they didn't already know/wouldn't find incredibly boring. And there's always going to be a lot of people knowing more about any given subject than I do.

But then I realized that's just the sort of defeatist attitude I've been struggling with for nearly an entire dreary year now, so here's a symbolic attempt to turn the trend around.

What'll you get? Norse Mythology!

I'm not saying I'm any kind of authority on this - these are just the stories I grew up with, but I love them dearly. I studied them with the intensity only a ten year old can bring (Norse mythology was to me what ponies and boybands were to the other girls), they were a main factor in me acquiring a degree in Medieval history, and all in all, it's one of the few subjects I imagine I will always get excited about.

So hey, I'll give it a go!
tilly_stratford: (Fred and Cyd: Don't mind you watching)
AWWWWW YEEEEAAAAHH. I might have been quizzed about one of those things I was crossing my fingers I wouldn't get quizzed about (The Sættargjerden concordat of 1277) but I somehow managed to write nine pages about it, so I guess I had to know something about it. In any case I'm pretty certain I must have been the only one who included a lengthy tangent going "It's amusing that the final agreement between the king and the archbishop happened to be written down on St. Lawrence's feast day, because..."

Anyway, a thousand thanks to those who wished me luck with my exam.

Aaand we're back to regular geeking:

- I see the Eight Doctor is going to get a new costume. I'm going to miss the Edwardian look, but I like what I'm seeing - fits nicely with my head!canon of a more practical Doctor during the Time War. He obviously took some fashion tips from his BF Fitz and damn now I want to read the EDAs...

Of course, no word on why Eight suddenly needs a new costume. I guess it's implied it's for Big Finish's covers, but I can't help dreaming about proper TV-BBC taking Eight back...

- Hahaha, what is this? A Norwegian dub of the first Lupin III series from the seventies? And it was released this year? HAHA WHAT. And the description presents it as "Hayao Miyazaki's animated show" which is a dirty rotten lie to sell more copies, jeez lousie (Miyazaki produced two episodes, but that was in the second series).

Still, it's hilariously weird. Why would they do this, what audience are they trying to reach anyway? I can't even decide if I want it, just to see how horrible it will be to watch (I can't even stand the American dubs!) - a Norwegian Lupin III gang? "Lupin den tredje"? How does a Norwegian voice artist handle a name like "Ishikawa Goemon"? Badly, if the misspelling on the cover is anything to go by. WANT/DON'T WANT CONFLICT.

- You know what I haven't done in a dog's age? A boring meme!

Current meme )

While I'm waiting for my eggs to boil (WHOOOOAAA MY LIFE IS A CONSTANT ADRENALINE RUSH), I had the dumbest idea (well not perhaps the dumbest. It's not like I decided to cover myself in cooking margarine and go balancing on the rooftop):

What if I did a game meme when I have such a poor grasp on current games?

So here, it's the thirty day video game meme (by the way, one day I'll finish that thirty-day movie meme. When I feel like it.), but I'll just do all the answers today, with less filler.

things that go bleep bloop blipidee bleep )

By the time I finished this it's gone from breakfast time to dinner time. Oh well, MORE EGGS.
tilly_stratford: (Bogie)
It's been ages since I last did a meme! And talking about myself is so much easier when there's a formula to follow, isn't it?

Ten random (relatively unknown) facts about me )
tilly_stratford: (Bogie)
And BAM! insomnia hits again. Apparently. Inexplicably.

And since two o'clock in the morning obviously is the best time for making decisions, I hereby declare my intention to do that thirty-day movie meme. Which is even cruel by my standards, since I'm not the sort of person who ever say "This one is my favourite movie in the whole world". Oh, and by the time I've (hopefully) finished this, I'll be through with all my exams for the term and also be twenty-three years old. So!

Day 01 - A movie that shouldn't have ended the way it did

Obvious answer: The Magnificent Ambersons. Test audiences are idiots.

After some more thought... Certain gangster movies of the thirties. The Roaring Twenties comes to mind.

I know the Hollywood plot rule at the time was "a killer must die in the end" and yeah, the protagonist in gangster movies does a whole lotta killin' so, you know, the ending never comes as a big surprise. But in certain movies of the era, the studio obviously had so much fun playing with their larger-than-life gangster they would postpone the death scene to literally the last few minutes of the movie. They'd have him swingin' in one scene, damsel on his arm and gunsel at his side, and then randomly killed in a drive-by shooting in the next. No build up, no foreshadowing, just "all right, fun's over, the nanny state wanted this ending".

And yet I forgive them every time. Because I love gangster movies.

The original Scarface (1932) doesn't have one of those
annoying endings, but I bet you can guess what happens to
Paul Muni in the final reel.

Things you can look forward to over the coming month:

Day 02 - A movie that you wish more people would watch
Day 03 - Your favorite new movie (came out this year)
Day 04 - Your favorite movie ever
Day 05 - A movie you hate

Pick 20 movies and put their summaries from TV Tropes' Better Than It Sounds and have your friends guess WITHOUT CHEATING.

Obviously most of my favourite movies weren't even mentioned )

In other news, I can't tie macramé to save my life. In case you were wondering.
tilly_stratford: (Darkwing: not convinced)
Right. My sexy computer Churchill has definitely and irreparably crashed. I should be looking for that Windows install CD but if there ever was a perfect time to do the "things that have made me happy lately" meme, it's now.

Pic spams make me happy )

Okay, I feel little bit more chipper now. Time to start tidying my room - I'm getting visitors tomorrow!
tilly_stratford: (Bogie)
1) Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.

2) NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.

3) They must ALREADY be on your hard drive—no Googling or Flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.

4) You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

Any excuse, really )

Let’s make a TARDIS wave throughout LJ. When you see this entry, post a picture of the show (aka Doctor Who) on your own journal.

I haven't forgotten you, Who!

You know, I still haven't seen The end of time. In fact I haven't watched new!Who since I turned the TV off halfway through Voyage of the damned. But... The Master!

(I had a dream months ago though where The end of time involved Two returning and being awesome and something about a panda and it was awesome. A lot of Masters just can't compete with that).
tilly_stratford: (ST: Kirk wants porn)
I've stopped sleeping again. So now I've just watched my first episode of The Twilight Zone. Amazing how the one single plot I could name from the show was the one with the gremlin on the wing of the airplane, and that just happens to be the one featuring The Shat (looking a right studmuffin in the early sixties).

Tilly; Unfocused student by day, closet sixties!Shatner-fancier by night.

What the hell, let's do that celebrity picture spam meme that's been making the rounds again.

Immaturity and shiny pictures )

I haven't slept for two days, indulge me.

Nicked this meme from [livejournal.com profile] _grayswandir_ - I mostly write about fannish things but this is good for procrastination might come in handy:

You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their lives, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute! Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating THAT PERSON? Since when?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-word answers seldom help anyone out.

Stuff about me and mine )

That helped my mood a little bit. Today it feels like my world has just collapsed in on itself and it's all because of me forgetting a few pills. Silly.
tilly_stratford: (Fred and Cyd: Don't mind you watching)
Earlier this week somebody over at [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek (which I keep pretending not to lurk at) linked to this failtastic article about how scifi is reportedly being "feminized" and how it's OMG RUINING EVERYTHING. Then somebody made a motivator quoting the article and I still haven't stopped laughing at it.

And now I've started giggling again because I caught a glimpse of it while uploading it. AHAHAA. I JUST DON'T KNOW.

I can do a very nice segue from featherbrains who can't enjoy fiction with females in it too, since I also felt like having a go at that wonderful meme making the rounds these days:

100 awesome female characters )

Ah, my first dread soak! Another great occasion of my dreadlock era.

I set up a very comfortable soaking station, made a new playlist (featuring the battle music in Amok Time, because all hair soaks should be HARDCORE) and made the recommended cleaning concoction (hot water, baking soda, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil and sea salt):

Water pre- and post-soak )

Actually not as bad as I expected. I feel like I do with all cleaning - it's only fun if you can tell the difference afterwards. I would have been disappointed with less dirt, even though I wash my hair every three days.

Ooh, my hair and scalp feels absolutely great now.

Also, the desktop meme:

Not at all shippy )
tilly_stratford: (Orson has had enough of your bs)
Aw, I had the last lecture on classical antiquity with Mister Mæhle today. I'll miss him, it's not all lecturers who understand that in a broad general history class you have to slow down now and then and find something quirky and seemingly inconsequential to marvel at. Like pornographic grafitti in Pompeii, that was a fun lecture.

If I become an historian I want to be like that - a complete understanding of the political and socio-economical facts, sure, but also all the weird little anecdotes and traditions and superstitions.

He's also taught me that it is in fact possible to find great intellectual and academic pleasure in reading Asterix comics, and also how The Godfather is an excellent primer to Roman social hierarkies. Great lecturer.

And now the username meme:

Wherefore art thou called that thing that thou art called )

Speaking of icons, it seems my Orson Welles/Prince of Foxes icon has become my default History icon, since that's the only one I have that's supposed to portray an actual historical person. Cesare Borgia was never sexier.

Top fives

tilly_stratford: (Kaizers: Gleeful Mink)
Man, this "Top Five" business was way harder than I thought. I've been so afraid of missing something vitally important I've been triple and quadruple checking every little thing.

It was fun though.

Top five Two/Jamie moments )

Top five Monty Python skits )

Top five Sherlock Holmes stories )

Top five Beatles songs )

Top five Beatles music videos )
tilly_stratford: (Fops with canes are teh sex)
My lovely pretty flist, I want to have something nice to think about in between reading textbooks.

Will you ask me to name my fannish top fives? Don't worry if it's something fannish I haven't written about in ages, I'll post pictures and everything.

Pretty please?
tilly_stratford: (Darkwing's not convinced)
I want to kiss every night
To squeeze and to hold you tight
I want to make violent love to you

Tip on big city etiquette from Tilly: 'Violent love' is definitely not the song to sing to yourself when you're out on your constitutional and think you're alone. But darn is it catchy.

Oh yes, I forgot: I saw A Fistful of Dollars. Disappointed Tilly is disappointed. Last week I wrote that I loved The Good, The Bad and The Ugly because it was something other than "black hat versus white hat, then showdown in Main Street". Do you know what the plot of Fistful is? "Black hat versus white hat, then showdown in Main Street".

Yeah alright they don't actually have black and white hats, but Clint plays the hero who does what he does because it's right and just, and Volonté plays the villain who's plain evil. And then they have a duel.

The only thing the movie had going for it was the score. And okay, the whole metal plate chest piece was pretty cool. And there was Clint Eastwood in sexy black jeans That still feels so weird to say.

And now a little survey to waste some time on:

Animated films )

Yes I believe but I'd rather not pray
What I believe in I'd rather not say baby
Did your God show you the door
Well I'm here to eat your apple to the core

My arms. Have. Fallen off. I have walked back and forth across the town picking up big parcels at the post office with things I couldn't get on the train, my Christmas toys mostly. And with a new laptop I can finally play Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of the Undrentide. Half-elven fighter, baby. I'm limiting myself to one hour per day.

Funny I should speak of arm loss, really. I had a really bad nightmare last night, the sort you wake up from with a jolt. A gigantic alligator ripped off my arm. Sure, that was bad in itself, but the worst thing was that no one cared, I was forced to tend to my empty arm socket spurting blood all by myself.

Don't you dare try to psychoanalyze me. I've got a weird phobia of sea monsters, that's all there is to it.

Anyway, voice post meme time!

This is what procrastination sounds like )

Yes - Sherlock Holmes, Gene Kelly's bum and Daryl Hannah, all in one pointless sound file. This is is indeed your lucky day.

Come on, flist, I want to hear your lovely voices!

It's raining, I'm feeling lazy and I've written today's quota on the term paper about Vysotskij, so it's meme time!

The song-shuffle poem )

Movie meme )

Okay, here's one non-meme thing so this entry isn't complete trash: Concert clip of Dan Fägerquist singing 'Ingenmansland' ("No man's land") on YouTube. I love that song. I hope he'll include it on his next record.
tilly_stratford: (Bogie)
Roy Rogers is not her style
And even Clark Gable's smile
Is something that she can't see
I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for me

In a display of genius decision-making I watched Psycho for the first time last night. Jesus.

It didn't have an effect on me immediately. I just thought it was an incredibly well-made horror movie. No, afterwards I watched Second chorus (and I pray that you never will, it was rubbish), and three Keaton two-reelers (one of them was a clearer copy of The frozen north, aka "What the hell did I just watch", you remember? It was funnier this time around actually). Then I went to sleep.

And I just couldn't rid myself of that final image, Anthony Perkin's blood-curdling smile. That disconcerting grin, those dark eyes. Hint of superimposed skull. And that scene at the top of the staircase, that music. It took a long while until I managed to fall asleep.

It's been so many years since I actually got shaky from a horror movie. These days horror movies only wants to make you jump. In Psycho there's just this atmosphere of things being disconcertingly wrong all the time, much more nerveracking.

And even though I started watching it knowing full well what sort of character Norman Bates was, twist ending and all, I still thought he was very cuddly. Except, you know, for those scenes.

And here's a meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] fantomfox:

*Stop what you're doing.
*Print screen your current desktop.
*If you have Photoshop (or whatever image editor you use) open, print screen.
*If you have a music player open, print screen.
*Pick a folder, open it, print screen.

Each image 480p wide to not eff up my blog dimensions )

And now I really gotta clean that cage.
