tilly_stratford: (Jamie/Doctor - true wuv)

Right then, time for a reaction post for The War Games. I guarantee you it will not be eloquent.

Anyway I'm really thankful for the fact that this is one of the few complete stories that survive from the Troughton era (though I'm sure more will pop up someday. Right? Right?), because I thought it was a lovely, exciting one - what others have described as padding I regard as build-up.

Ah, I think I'll go the easy way and incorporate a pic spam.

- I adore how the story first pretends to be "just" a WWI historical, with The Doc, Jamie and Zoe walking straight into No Man's Land and getting in trouble. Oh you guys, here we go again.

And then we meet Lady Jennifer and she turns out to be awesome.

THIS LADY? AWESOME.

- We also meet our first bespectacled villain. This is important, as it is the morale of the story: PEOPLE WITH GLASSES ARE EVIL. ALWAYS.

- Oh God I'm too emotional for this. First part, The Doc is to be executed and he says goodbye to Zoe and Jamie. I JUST REALIZED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THAT SCENE.

- Oh dear, now I've begun wibbling. Jamie is imprisoned with an Englishman from the same war he fought in, and his first instinct is to befriend him rather than kill him. AWWW look at Jamie all grown up!

- Well hello there Bespectacled Villain No. 2! Well, bemonocled. Because HE EES ZE GERMAN, JAH?

- The Doctor needs a slower fuse for the bomb he's fixing. In deep thought he fiddles with a tassel on Jamie's sporran until Jamie, embarassed, pushes his hand away. :DDD

EVERYBODY LOOK AT JAMIE'S CROTCH PLEASE.

- he Doctor is captured IN THE AWKWARDEST WAY POSSIBLE.

- GOOD OLD FASHIONED SCIFI BONDAGE YAY

- Then we meet THE MAIN BIG BADS. MOST OF WHOM WEAR GLASSES.

Come on. Make an educated guess as to who is the FABULOUS one. Guess which one I like. Go on, guess.

- The Doctor and the War Chief had a thing in the past. The breakup was obviously a bad one because when they recognize eachother they're both like OH SHIT.

- The War Lord is the one with the thickest glasses, so OBVIOUSLY HE IS THE EVILLEST!

- Okay, this scene is pretty damn awesome. The War Chief tries to seduce the Doctor with the power and "TOGETHAR WE CAN RUEL THE UNIVARS" schtick, and for the moment it seems to be working.

I love morally ambigious! Two. Or plain seemingly evil! Two. That's sorta why I want The Enemy of the World to pop up in somebody's attic.

- Even knocked out Jamie is cute.

- It seems all renegade Time Lords have a weakness for strapping Scottish young men.

- I'm seeing the sense in the whole "the War Chief is really the Master" theory. It's a good one, but I'm way more in love with the theory where The Master idolized the War Chief and decided to adapt his style.

DA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA WAR CHIIIIIEF! DA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA WAR CHIIIIIIEF!

- I *love* the Time Lord's robes. They should always have been like this.

Also HELLO BERNARD HORSFALL.

- OH GOD WE'RE NEARING THE END. I CAN'T TAKE IT. The Doctor just sort of give up and then get to see Jamie and Zoe one last time and they beg them to shut off the force-field so they can be near each other. AND AND AND they talk the Doctor into trying to escape and normally you'd go "oh they'll manage it just fine" and THEY DON'T.

"There must be something we can do!" - "No, Zoe. Not this time."

ISN'T THAT THE SADDEST THING EVER SAID IN DOCTOR WHO?

- "Goodbye Jamie."
"But Doctor! Surely we could - "
"Goodbye Jamie."
"I... I won't forget you, you know."

- THEY DO. THEY MAKE HIM FORGET HIM. TIME LORDS ARE BASTARDS.

- And goodbye to Two, my favourite Doctor. I became a fan with NewWho, but then I discovered Two and now NewWho can't hold a candle to this. Thankfully I haven't been watching the Troughton era chronologically, so there are still bits and pieces here and there I've yet to see, but I don't think there are any more complete stories left for me.

Damn the BBC.
