My father had a bird or two in the house for a while, when he was dating someone who kept birds, and then he broke up with her and my sister got him a conure as a birthday gift. Until he got tired of the screeching and got rid of it. Not too long ago I read a nonfiction book about a woman who got given a parrot to foster and she had been wild-caught and then badly treated by her previous owner and it was just kind of a horrible experience for the year or two she had the bird until it escaped and died in the cold. And then she got offered another parrot to foster and he was just loving and wonderful. The point of the above stories being A) that branching out into an unfamiliar type of pet has a certain learning curve in terms of expectable problems and jobs, so B) do your research before deciding for sure you want one.

Also, I tend to have a braid running down my back to my waist, and I've had a kitty doing a Rapunzel act on more than one occasion, grabbing it or trying to climb right up it.
