Fanart: JLI party
I've been looking too much at Phil Noto's brilliant "Avengers through the ages" drawings, which look like casual photographs -- people are out of focus, or out of frame, or in conversation. They're great. I'm no Noto, but I did say I wanted to experiment more with my art this year.
Of course, he does them as warmups and quick little asides. I've been working on this dumb image all week and it's still not what I wanted it to be, so I'm just gonna cut my losses and post it.
I had the idea I wanted it to look something like a flash photograph. Then eight hours later I realized my favourite character is clad entirely in reflective material, oy.
There were also going to be more characters, I sketched and inked both Guy Gardner (shotgunning champagne) and Mister Miracle (talking to J'onn) when I realized it was getting too crowded (and also I am lazy).

That's Black Canary (in her hideous eighties' costume) out of focus, Maxwell Lord talking to Booster and J'onn far in the back. 1987 is the year Max got Booster into the League, Booster was a naïve kid of twenty (who'd been in the superhero game for like a year at that point). I like to imagine Max tried to coach Booster in the beginning. I guess I wanted the image to look a little more ambiguous than it does.
Ugh, so many niggling bits. So many things I decided to redraw as I was doing finishing touches. So many things that STILL don't look the way I wanted them to...
I try to remind myself of stuff I DO like, so... Booster's googles, the sheen on J'onn's head, the full sketch of Canary actually looked pretty nice.
And dat butt.
I remember as a kid we had a Polaroid camera. I can't quite remember what kind, I don't think it was one of those where you had to peel the paper off. To this day I love the excitement of instant photo cameras.
