Sunday treat: Calaveras

I know El Día de los Muertos isn't until next Sunday, but I've been reading Aztec history and it only served as a reminder of how much I love Latin American folk art, in particular calaveras:

Just check out that sassy lady.

I seriously want to visit Mexico just so I can get my own La Calavera Catrina as beautiful as that one. Yeah pssh with the culture, I'm an art tart.

If my mom ever goes back to Mexico I'll have her look for one :P ...As long as she brings me a sugar skull. Mmm.

Ah, it's so weird to be reminded that Mexico isn't this strange semi-mythical faraway place to everyone :P

It's like our.....next door neighbor that half the neighborhood doesn't like and no one knows why. But they occasionally come up with something cool :P LIKE SUGAR SKULLS.

My junior high school was in an area of Dallas with a significant Hispanic population. It was very common to hear on a Monday morning when attendance was being taken that a particular person was absent because their parents had taken them to visit family in Mexico over the weekend and they hadn't quite made it back north yet.

And yet I've never myself visited Mexico. I've visited Spain for a weekend, but never Mexico.
