For a lack of American comics
Aug. 3rd, 2011 05:02 pmI was looking for something entirely different when I stumbled over some scanlations of the manga Lupin the Third Y (see, there are three different TV series, and four or so different manga series. It's a confusing franchise). I'm starting to realize my approach to this franchise can pretty much be summed up as "OH WELL FOR COMPLETION'S SAKE I GUESS".
It feels strange reading a Lupin manga not drawn by Monkey Punch (I miss the cool shooooes) - the art in Y strikes me as a bit bland (not even close to the Monkey Punch look, and still not quite the Red Jacket look), not to mention how the supporting cast is drawn in a completely different style to our main characters. Pretty jarring. But overall the art is good, if a little schizophrenic.

And hey, is that thing where only the first chapter is lovingly shaded with traditional media (Zenigata! Your trenchcoat!) something that's common in manga? I don't know, to have good-looking previews maybe? (Hi I'm clueless about manga business standards).
As for characterization: Hey, this is Red Jacket-type Lupin, not original manga-type Lupin, so you know - no raping. No raping is good. It also means no dark storylines or splattering blood, or five bajillion dirty innuendos per page (hey, I liked those). But at least Goemon, Jigen and Fujiko are actual well-rounded characters with parts to play (Fujiko is even just one chick!), so it levels out.
(Also, for some reason, celebrity cameos. Jacques Chirac, what the fuck.)
