I'd tell you anything
If I had anything to say
Yeah, I keep it bottled in
'Cause there's a time
And there's a place for this

Feel better today. Not quite all there, but better.

IMDB tells me Basil Rathbone was up for the part of Lord Henry in the 1945 adaption of The Picture of Dorian Gray, but lost to George Sanders. I haven't even seen the movie, but dude. 1945's Basil Rathbone as obsessive Lord Henry. DO WANT.

I haven't quite decided if I'll build a time machine and right this wrong, or if I should just start working on those clones. In that way we can have young Jeremy Brett as Dorian as well. Because as we have established before: He was ridiculously pretty.

Oh yeah, and I finished A Study in Scarlet. squee, w/audio bits )

And Andrea and Rina; I'm sorry if I've been no fun lately :-P You're great, I'm just tired and broke, sorry. Let's do something fun tomorrow!

Met the ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise
This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes:
Ships were made for sinking
Whiskey made for drinking

I can't for the life of me understand why The Hound of The Baskervilles is the popular one. It's an okay story with a few exciting bits, but personally I think both The Sign of Four and The Valley of Fear are far better novels.

My pet theory is that it's connected to HOUN being the first story published after Conan Doyle killed Holmes off. Or it might have something to do with my odd tastes in stories again.

So yes, another long stroll today, walking by the wharf as darkness was falling - lovely atmosphere. When Holmes hoarsely cried out "Watson, if we can wound it WE CAN KILL IT!" I got goosebumps. No points guessing which story.

Impromptu review and are you surprised )

There, that's the serious thoughts (are you kidding) out of the way, here's for the minor/silly observations, and even a little soundbite I uploaded:

A reference from A Study in Scarlet? Am I dreaming? )

So that's that. I'm afraid I'll continue logging all my silly observations as I continue listening to these (frankly amazing) adaptions. At least I'll be keeping them behind cuts mostly.

Also rewatched Without A Clue, because it's a sweet parody, if a little crude at times. No one is as shocked as me at how I find Ben Kingsley viciously sexy as Watson. Is it the moustache? The frock coat? The comedy timing? I'VE NO IDEA.

So there I was, reading in bed and mellowing out to my fifties playlist, when the music changed from Sam Cooke to electronic mood music, and I looked up and thougt, "That's weird, that doesn't sound like anything I would download purchase". Then a soft voice started speaking, "Hello. I am Conrad Westmaas, and I play C'rizz..."

Why on earth a random Big Finish season preview has ended up in my fifties playlist I have no idea, but my money is on BF trying to cash in on my instinctive love for guys named Conrad ("It had always been a girlish dream of mine...") with possible brainwashing. It worked halfway, though, because I went to the BF site and listened to the trailer for the next audio in line, The creed of Kromon, which just happens to be the one C'rizz first pops up in.

Oh, that reminds me, I've still got U.N.I.T.: The Coup to listen to, which you (yes, you!) can get FREE from BF's site. The Brigadier's in it, so it must be good, right?

Also, Tragical history tour got absolutely no photos of the Brig in his kilt. I call outrage.

Argh, curse Raphaël Haroche and his albums that are impossible to get hold of in Norway. But at least he's got cute low-budget music videos, so I'll let him off the hook this time.

I love this song.

Ah, what a brilliant day this turned out to be. Woke up in a good mood, long shower, ate breakfast watching clips of Daily Show tosses (I wasn't aware they were called tosses until last night. Already my mind has transformed the word into tossers, toss-ups, toss-offs and other puerile things. THE HEAT IS KILLING ME OKAY, I get the mind of a ten-year-old in this weather). You have no idea how funny I find corpsing. Which is why I'm watching the tosses, you see.

I then found a CD I had long thought lost, which meant I could rock to The Beatles' version of Money (that's what I want) on my way to work. I love that live rendition. I don't know when it was recorded, probably after their big break, but you can hear they've still got the attitude from their early days, when they played rock and wore leather at Der Kaiserkeller.

You know what? Here. Listen to those drums and that guitar, and the way John shouts out the lyrics. This was what the Beatles were like before the matching suits and Love me do.

It was my last day at work, somewhat melancholic. I hate saying goodbye to people. Awkward things, goodbyes. Everybody expects them to be so meaningful and worth remembering, when they're just a ritual you go through with who knows how many times in your life. Can't the time we spent together every day be the meaningful part?

Anyway, time to do some wrestling with Brownie. A trip to the vet revealed that he's got an infection in one paw - appearantly it's a common problem among rats, but it means I have to rub some antiobiotics on it twice a day. He's not too happy about the arrangement.

I told myself to keep my mouth shut
But I still end up saying if and but
I lied to myself right from the start
And I’ve just worked out that I’m falling apart

Lovely day. Had a smashing time with Tiny on our movie night. We had chocolate pudding and watched all sorts of nifty things: House, The Daily Show, Star Trek TNG (featuring Q of course. Thankfully all my flat buddies are gone so nobody could hear us whoop and laugh), and I got Tiny to finally see Pygmalion and O Brother Where Art Thou.

Then we went to bed, but got talking and two hours later we simply could not help but get up again to watch The Great Mouse Detective. Norwegian dub, of course - although I think "flangerhanger" is a hilarious word (even more so at four o'clock in the morning) and I love Vincent Price with a vengeance, Helge Jordal will always be our Ratigan ("Din skjønne lille skrrrulling!").

I also introduced her to Dr. Horrible's singalong blog (combining my two loves: Supervillains and musicals) and the moment we woke up today we watched Act two. It feels so good for once to be at the right place at exactly the right time! It's not often I get it right.

So it was a looovely movie night. I wish we could have one once a week. At least.

And here's a meme:

1. Reply to this post (and indicate you'd like to be meme'd) and I'll assign you a letter
2. List 5 songs you like that start with that letter
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.
4: Optionally, you can give me a letter and I'll reply in comments with some tracks for that one

[livejournal.com profile] athenegenia hit me with G for gorgeous, and all of these can be downloaded via SendSpace in WMA format.

Lord I am a surgeon and music is my knife )

Now excuse me, I've gotten hold of Without a clue and intend to watch it. Michael Caine as a slightly dense fake Holmes - if it isn't a great movie I think I shall cry.

Oh please
Lend your little ear to my pleas
Lend a ray of cheer to my pleas
Tell me that you love me too

The weather was rubbish, so we didn't go to the Medieval Festival, instead we went to the cinema and saw the new Indiana Jones movie.

And it was a fun romp, like it should be. I can overlook a lot of blemishes watching Indiana Jones movies. All I ask for are some dusty ruins, a snake gag, Harrison Ford doing his half-grin, and some action scenes that makes you punch the air and go "hell yeah!". And it delivered, sure.

I would have liked it more if somebody had looked at the finished product and thought, "Wait - those bits doesn't make any logical sense, we need to fix that" (and I'm not talking about the scifi here). It would have been lovely if it had managed to stick to its own premises, but ah well, you can't have it all. The snake gag was pretty funny this time, that makes up for it in my eyes.

Talking about movies, I had a quick shufti through the DVD section at the library again today. There exists such a thing as an experimental low budget version of Macbeth from 1979 with Ian McKellen and Judi Dench in the cast - that's gotta be a bit brilliant, doesn't it? I didn't get that, though, I got Monkey business instead. There are days fit for a murderous dysfunctional married couple, and days where you'd rather have Groucho Marx delivering thinly veiled insults to pretty women. This day is one of the latter.

I also found a CD of some later Bing Crosby material, and it's the worst I might ever have heard of his stuff. Appearantly the songs weren't too bad (if a little bland) when they were recorded in the late fifties, but they were given the full orchestra treatment after his death and reissued, and it sounds so incredibly dull and formulaic and there's some horribly reverberation stuff going on. I can't bring myself to listen to it all.

I think I've decided when it comes to Bing, the earlier - the better. I'm still so in love with the music from when he was in The Rhythm Boys.

And just to prove it, I'll do something I never do - include a MP3-file of the greatest boyband in history (until the Beatles showed up, anyway):

The Rhythm Boys - Mississippi mud/I left my sugar standing in the rain (live)

Domaren räknar ett, två, tre och jag stapplar upp
Och duckar men vad hjälper det när Rocky slår en uppercut
Det är något vackert med det här, att vara den som tar imot
Så länge det är Rocky som slår är det jag som er god

And there were. Tickets left for Fägerquist's intimate concert yesterday, I mean. After the first couple of songs he said to the audience, "If you wonder who these madly applauding people at in the front are, they are people I hired in from the Humanistic Academy." Heeh.

The concert wasn't quite as intense as the performance I had seen earlier, probably because he mostly concentrated on the love songs. But it was beautifully lit: All the light was shut off, there wan't a spotlight on, only live candles here and there on the stage. It's one of the greatest things I've ever seen. And afterwards we sat with him for hours by the bar, chatting and singing. Which is a slightly worrisome thing to do with a person you hold in awe.

We were eight, all girls, and so we wondered if people would draw their own conclusions (let's face it, he isn't hard on the eyes), but thankfully Kalle, one of the older writers in my class showed up, wearing his Lenin cap. And since I was wearing my green Mao cap, we kept calling eachother "Comrade" all through the night. He's that sort of man.

In other news, I walked past the animal shelter and got to meet some of the inhabitants. In the window, a twocoloured cat was sleeping peacefully (this may or may not have been Tutta or Dolly, as far as I could recognise him/her from the posters), and in the fenced-in area I had a long conversation with a very talkative long-haired cat who came running immediately when I walked to the fence. And third there was an orange tabby out there too, but she seemed nervous so I didn't go any closer.

And for the first time ever on this journal: Here comes some music you can listen to.
Mina hästar // Dan Fägerquist - ("My horses") In the "intense" category.
Marseille // Dan Fägerquist - One of those with nice slavic music.
Lyrisk sång // Dan Fägerquist - ("The lyrical song") Beautiful love song. About running away with your loved one, even though you probably won't make it.
